3-3/4" SEASPEY PROTOTYPE REEL IN COCOBOLO AND STAINLESS STEEL
This is the Seaspey saltwater/freshwater prototype reel, completed May 2015. This reel was designed with ideas and fabrication methods developed from the successful Seaspey concept reel's development and testing. For this prototype I added a ceramic ball check—now moved inside the drag assembly—a more incremental drag adjustment, and an injection-type spindle lubrication system, accessible through the main capscrew.

Along with continuing to make all the parts out of genuinely saltwater-resistant materials (no aluminum), I purposely maintain the open concept design of the Scarborough that was present in the earlier Sea Reel and later Seaspey concept reel. There is ample clearance throughout the Seaspey's workings to allow for the free flow of water in and out. If submerged, water can even flow through the drag system without negative effect to its capabilities.

I believe the best way to protect a reel from the effects of saltwater is not necessarily to seal it out of all the workings. Rather, because salt is so much easier to rinse away while it's still wet, I prefer to allow water to flow freely in and out of these reels, making the salt easily rinsed away with clean water when fishing is done for the day. The inner ventilation of the spool is also designed to enable easy rinsing of absorbent braided backing and to prevent pooling.
