4-1/2" SEA REEL IN BOCOTE AND STAINLESS STEEL
While the hardwood spey reels I make started out in the same classic Scarborough pattern as my single-hand reels, the pursuit of fish off the beach as well as in the river drove me to begin adapting the design to be used as a saltwater fighting fly reel.

Towards this goal, I developed a saltwater-compatible Lignum Vitae-based drag, and tested it in the Sea Reel, completed in June 2014. As with my earlier doublehanders, this reel is basically a Scarborough reel but with the same forged mounting bracket, split foot design and ceramic ball check I developed for my singlehand fly reels.

For compatability with saltwater, the mounting bracket is made of stainless steel instead of aluminum. Along with the Lignum Vitae drag, I added a repositionable line guide ring.
